Santiniketan during Basanta Utsav

The festival of colours is celebrated a little differently in Tagore town. Called Dol Utsav across the state of West Bengal, Santiniketan belovedly named it Basanta Utsav, meaning “the festival of spring.” Holi at Santiniketan is celebrated with much fervour as an annual cultural festival. Marking the arrival of spring, where the world blooms anew after winter into a riot of colours, Basanta Utsav is a way of welcoming colours into our lives and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the students and faculty of Visva-Bharati University, as well as the local community.

Shantiniketan Dol Utsav has its roots in the teachings of Rabindranath Tagore, who founded the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. Tagore believed in the importance of integrating nature into the learning experience and encouraged the students to celebrate spring as a symbol of renewal and growth.

Over the years, Basanta Utsav Visva Bharati University has evolved into a grand celebration that encompasses music, dance, and art. Students from different departments come together to perform traditional Bengali songs and dances, as well as cultural programs from other parts of India. The festival is also known for its colourful and lively atmosphere, where people perform and smear each other with “abir” or “gulaal,” dressed in bright and vibrant spring colours with yellow taking centre stage.

In recent years, Basanta Utsav Santiniketan has gained recognition as a major cultural event in West Bengal and attracts tourists from all over the country. The festival is now celebrated over a period of three days and features a variety of cultural programs, including classical music and dance performances, folk music, and theatre. The festival also features an exhibition of handicrafts, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of West Bengal.
